Course Goal

Introduce beginners to the fundamentals of fly fishing. Students leave understanding gear, casting basics, water reading, and simple rigging.

Introduction & Safety

  • Welcome students and introduce RiverRat Fly Co.
  • Explain what makes fly fishing different.
  • Discuss polarized glasses and hook safety.
  • Discuss river safety: slippery rocks and current awareness.

Fish Behavior & River Reading

  • What trout eat: mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, minnows.
  • Identify riffles, runs, pools, and seams.
  • Explain trout position: where food comes with minimal energy.

Rigging Demo

  • Attach the leader to the fly line
  • Tie an Improved Clinch Knot
  • Discuss the proper leader length
  • Explain why knots should be wetted before tightening

Casting Instruction

  • Grip and stance.
  • Basic casting motion (10 to 2).
  • Back cast timing.
  • False casting.
  • Shooting line.
  • Accuracy drills.
  • Roll cast.

Wrap Up

  • Demonstrate line mending.
  • Explain natural drift.
  • Explain hook set.
  • Final tips: slow down casting, fish seams, move often.
